Glycosaminoglycans (GAGS) are a fascinating group of molecules that are attracting increasing interest amongst scientists working in cell biology, biochemistry and medicine. GAGS are multifunctional polysaccharides composed of repeating disaccharide units. Variations are imposed on the disaccharide repeats by post-synthetic modifications in the form of sulfation and epimerisation; these modifications often dictate the protein recognition properties and biological activities of GAGS.
