Sulfated and Epimerised Derivatives

Chemical analogues of heparin and heparan sulfate.

K5 polysaccharide, produced in E. coli K5, has a repeat unit structure identical to the non-sulphated regions of heparan sulfate (HS); we provide this polymer in its native form and as low (L) and high (H) sulphated derivatives. Sulphation and epimerisation are carried out by chemical and enzymatic methods.

A small selection of low molecular weight sulphated K5 materials is also available.

These modified K5 polysaccharides produce some of the characteristic structural features of heparin and heparan sulphate including the stepwise modifications that occur during polymer biosynthesis. However they also contain structural motifs that are not seen in HS and heparin. For example the K5/OS (H): (K5004) contains highly O-sulphated GlcA – GlcNAc repeat units and the E-K5/OS (H): (E-K5010) contains both O-sulphated IdoA – GlcNAc and GlcA – GlcNAc units. The most heparin-like material is the E-K5/NS, OS (H) (E-K5012) but this product has a lower iduronic content (approx. 50% of uronic acids are IdoA) and a higher O-sulphate content than heparin.
